The Karen Weavers Trunk Show
February 5, 2016 @ 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Come meet the Karen Weavers of Portland and see a demonstration of their traditional weaving. Plus you have a chance to support their work and financial independence through a purchase of their woven goods. They will have a limited supply of their unique hand-woven items for sale during this Trunk Show — and request “Cash ONLY” for any purchase you make. This is a rare opportunity to meet and support traditional Southeast Asian back-strap weavers!
The Karen Weavers (pronounced “Kah-Ren”) are a minority group of refugees from Myanmar (formerly Burma) that have resettled in Portland. Their traditional back-strap weaving is an important tradition to them and helps them retain an important link to their cultural history. It’s also become an important part of their social network, where they come together weekly to weave as part of a Lutheran Community Services NW program called “Weaving Together”.
“Weaving Together” promotes women’s empowerment, healing, cultural adjustment, economic vitality and the advancement of indigenous knowledge through the practice of weaving. In meeting with the Karen Weavers, it is clear how important this weekly weaving is to them. A chance to stay connected – and to pass on their traditional weaving skills and knowledge to a new generation of young Karen Weavers.
We hope you can join us for this very special event!
