Specialty Class: Felted Purse with Resist Pattern

Specialty Class: Felted Purse with Resist Pattern

Friday, July 19
1:00-4:00 pm

Are you interested in adding a new fiber art to your cache of crafts? Then join us for this fun introduction to Wet Felting!

We’ll create an adorable small, buttoned purse using merino wool roving and a “resist” pattern. Our instructor, Susan Zenier, will guide us through the steps while helping with color and design choices. You’ll be amazed at how these soft fibers hold together when subjected to hot water!

This class is designed for beginners, so if you’re curious about how to create a felted item, this is your chance to find out!

The class fee includes a one-ounce skein of merino wool roving in your choice of color – enough to make one purse. The Instructor will also provide additional accessory fibers for you to choose from for decorating your purse. These will be used to create the resist pattern on your project – and really give it that “Wow” factor!

All tools required for the project will be provided in class.

If you wish, you may purchase a button to finish off your purse (this is optional). As a student, you will receive a 10 percent discount on any additional supplies you purchase on the day of the class.

Our class instructor, Susan Zenier, is a passionate artist who works in many media. She has a strong aesthetic for mixing colors successfully to create high-impact results. Susan brings her eye for color and form to this specialty felting class.

Summer Knit Along

Summer Knit Along

Wednesdays, 6:30-8:00pm
July 10-August 14

We had so much fun with last summer’s Knit Along, we decided to do it again!

This year’s pattern is “Oak Park,” by Laura Aylor, available for sale on Ravelry. Don’t be intimidated by all the color – the pattern is created with modular knitting, where you add new blocks of color by picking up stitches along the edges of what you’ve already knit. We’re looking forward to trying out this technique!

The pattern includes instructions for both a cowl and a scarf, so you can pick the item that’s more appealing to you.

There is no charge to participate in the Knit Along. Just bring your supplies and prepare to make some new fiber friends. You are welcome to use yarn from your stash, but if you choose to purchase something new, you’ll receive a 10% discount during Knit Along hours.

Our Summer Knit Along will be led again by our talented Staffer Marguerite. She’s very excited about this pattern and it’s unique technique. And she’s definitely looking forward to spending fun and relaxing Wednesday evenings with you!

We all look forward to knitting with you this summer!

Road Trip Projects

Road Trip Projects

Summer is just around the corner, which means it’s time to start planning those Road Trip Projects – even if the trip is to your local Pool or Baseball diamond! The ideal Road Trip Project is small and simple – you don’t want to miss out on the scenery because you’re too wrapped up in a complicated stitch. Something repetitive that doesn’t overly tax the brain is the perfect thing to keep your hands busy while you watch the miles go by, or your kid running bases.

Read on for some great Project ideas!

An easy and fun project that’s great for summer is the “6×6 Traveling Rib Cowl Kit.” This squishy-soft cowl features a simple, Zen-like stitch pattern that “travels” around the cowl. Shown here is the short version; modifications are available for a longer version as well. You can make either length with just one skein each of Shibui Birch and Habu Textile’s N-80 Silk- Wrapped Merino. The Kit includes the pattern, plus the two yarns in complementary color combinations. This is a really striking cowl, but one that is super easy to make. Great for knitting while chatting with your friends and family! And if you want to get ahead on your holiday gifts, this is a perfect candidate since it comes in so many lovely colors.

The elegant “Summer Silk Topper” is just the thing for chilly summer evenings, or for over-air-conditioned indoor spaces. The Topper is knit flat, holding one strand of Habu Textiles’s Tsumugi Silk together with one strand of Mohair throughout, and then seamed together at the end. This allows for more knitting and less purling, making the Topper faster and easier to make. And using a Size 10 needle, you can speed through this and have it ready to wear in no time! We have these made up as Kits with the pattern and yarn included, so you can just “Grab and Go”! But if you prefer to pick out your own color combo, you are welcome to do so – we have tons of colors in both the Silk and Mohair! Plus the pattern is free with yarn purchase at our Shop.

Knit a drawstring bag on your trip!
If you’re in need of a cute bag to tote your fiber projects around in, we have just the thing: the “Parrot Drawstring Bag.” Staffer Tracy designed this fun crocheted bag using two skeins of Berroco’s Modern Cotton and one skein of Pappagallo from Trendsetter. Pappagallo comes in a variety of fun, colorful combinations, the perfect thing to complement bright summer fashions. The pattern is for sale at our shop.

Next up is the “Elegant Luxury Scarf Kit” from Imperial Yarn. This luscious scarf kit includes the yarn and the pattern, so all you need is needles and you’re good to go! It’s made with two skeins of Imperial Yarn’s Our Back 40 American Classic Alpaca Yarn, a yarn so soft, your hands will thank you while you’re knitting it. And the kit bag even comes with a tiny bell, perfect for ringing for the Bar Menu while sitting Poolside! We really liked the simple lace pattern – it’s just challenging enough to keep your brain engaged, but repetitive enough for you to memorize it quickly.

The “Fresco Simple Slouchy Hat Kit” also features a super-soft yarn. This adorable hat is knit with two skeins of Classic Elite’s Fresco – a blend of alpaca, angora and wool. This project is so simple, you can create several while you travel, and have Holiday gifts all lined up by the end of the summer! We have kits for this highly wearable hat available in many different colors, to suit everyone on your gift list and, of course, one for you!

Any of these projects will make a perfect companion for your travels, even if you’re only going as far as your backyard! We look forward to seeing what you’re working on this summer – so please stop by and show us!

Get These 2019 Rose City Yarn Crawl Patterns at Northwest Wools

Our theme for the 2019 Rose City Yarn Crawl is “A Walk in the Park,” and it was so much fun coming up with patterns to go with the theme! This year we have something extra special: along with our Featured Knit and Crochet Patterns, we will also offer an “unofficial” Crawl pattern for Weavers! We’ll have Limited Edition Yarn Kits of all three of these items available for sale during the Crawl – or you can get the patterns for free with any Shop purchase during the four days of the Yarn Crawl.

2019 Rose City Yarn Crawl Featured Patterns

Birding the Tualatin River Refuge

Designer: Jackie Howard Kraybill

Our Northwest Wools Featured Knit Pattern has you take a walk in a local National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) versus a mere park! Called “Birding the Tualatin River Refuge,” it brings in all elements found in an NWR: water, grasses and trees. Full of interesting textures and patterns, this is a fun three-color knit made with Malabrigo Rios. And to finish it off, we are offering a Limited Edition Bird Shawl Pin from Local Indie Artist Candace Wilson of “One a Kind Buttons.”  So when you’re done knitting your infinity cowl, you can be a true Portlander and “Put a Bird On it”!  Woohoo!

Rooster Rock Mitts

Designer: Tinaka

And for our Northwest Wools Crochet Featured Pattern, we are challenging you to not merely walk, but to climb in this park! Our “Rooster Rock Mitts” pattern features two skeins of Trendsetter New York yarn in striking greens, to inspire your park aspirations. Topped off with a perky flower on the wrist, it will reward your crochet efforts with a very wearable and fun pair of fingerless mitts.

We wish to thank Northwest Wools Alumni Tinaka, who once again created our cool Crochet Pattern.

Sanctuary Shrug

Designer: Peg Silloway

We are excited to be offering a pattern for all of you weavers during this year’s Rose City Yarn Crawl! While it’s “unofficial,” it’s still well designed — and lots of fun to make on either a Rigid Heddle Loom or with a 4-shaft Loom.  And it’s a lovely and versatile piece to wear once completed!

The “Sanctuary Shrug” was created to honor the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge, as part of the Yarn Crawl’s “A Walk in the Park” theme for 2019.  It was designed by our Rigid Heddle Weaving Instructor, Peg Silloway. Peg is also well-known in the weaving community as the artistic force behind Silloway Weaving Studio.

All three patterns are free to you during the four days of the Rose City Yarn Crawl with any Shop purchase. Or you can purchase any of the three as a Yarn Kit — which includes the pattern, plus the yarns needed to make the cowl, mitts or shrug. The cowl kit also includes the One of a Kind bird shawl pin, so you’ll be all set to hit the National Wildlife Refuge in style!
