Friday, December 6
2:00 – 6:00 pm
We are excited to bring Candace Coleman back to Northwest Wools to showcase her unique crocheted artwork! Join us on First Friday for an Art Show and Sale of Candace’s work.
Candace’s beautiful crochet collages reflect her deep connection to nature. “Each piece of artwork I create is to honor the life force,” she says. “It is a celebration of the wonders and diversity of the natural world. It is a quiet form of activism – a plea to walk gently on the planet and a plea to care for the inhabitants.”
Candace’s artwork is inspired by her observation of the natural world. With an image in mind, she crochets hundreds of small spirals and uses them to form a design. Next, she pieces together a backing from cotton fabric and hand-sews the crocheted pieces to it. Tide pools, lichens, flower parts, and transition areas such as the edge of the sea are some of the subjects of her artwork.
“I am especially interested in the variety of species that live tightly packed together in apparent harmony,” says Candace. “There is such a sense of community and relationship.”
Candace has worked as a Fiber Artist since the 1970s, first as a creator of tapestries, then as a Mixed Media Artist, and more recently in crochet collage. She has been commissioned to create pieces for local businesses and private collections, and her artwork has been exhibited at a variety of venues, including the Portland Art Museum, the Henry Gallery in Seattle, and the Western Colorado Center for the Arts.
We hope you can join us on First Friday to see these original creations, meet the Artist, and perhaps purchase one as the perfect holiday gift!
Multnomah Village’s annual Holiday Gala will also be taking place, so stick around and soak up the atmosphere! Special events include a tree-lighting ceremony, free horse-drawn carriage rides, Carolers, a strolling Santa, and more!
Holiday Gifts at Northwest Wools
With the holidays just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about your gift lists: both what you plan to give others, and those items you want to add to your own wish list! For either one, we’ve got you covered with an array of items that will delight any Fiber Artist.
We’ve got a large selection of beautiful ceramic yarn bowls and matching mugs from Master Potter Frank Philipps. Frank has been making pottery in the Bauhaus tradition for almost 40 years, combining function and beauty in every hand-made piece.
Frank Phillips Pottery is based in Ashland, Oregon. When you buy one of Frank’s bowls or mugs, you are not only purchasing a unique piece of art, you are also supporting an Oregon artist. Northwest Wools is proud to support Frank Philipps Pottery, and thrilled to be the exclusive Portland vendor of these one-of-a-kind yarn bowls.
Interchangeable knitting needle sets are high on many knitters’ wish lists, and we have sets in a number of varieties and price ranges. We also have crochet hook sets for the crochet enthusiast in your life. And for crafters of all stripes, we have a variety of needle and hook storage cases, books, project bags and yarn caddies — some hand-made by Northwest Wools Instructor Judy!
We love our new Northwest Wools Project Bags. These stylish bags were designed exclusively for our shop by Heidi West Designs, and come in two different patterns. They feature internal pockets and plenty of space for your projects, and the zippered top stands open like a doctor’s bag! What a chic and practical gift for anyone on your list (including you!)!
We have lots of popular yarn kits to choose from, or we can help you build your own. The Plant Pot Cozy Kit comes with yarn, pattern and adorable ceramic button. You can give the kit itself as a gift, or, if you have time, crochet it yourself and add a plant for an extra special present.
And if you’re looking for something unique, browse our selection of locally dyed and sourced yarns. These exquisite yarns are the type of luxury item we don’t always buy for ourselves, but covet every time we’re in the yarn store! That special skein is sure to make any fiber artist smile.
Tools that make crafting easier are always a hit. We have umbrella swifts and ball winders so you can wind your yarn skeins quickly and neatly. Or treat your favorite crafter to a Coco Knits Maker’s Keep. This handy magnetic bracelet gives you a place to stick your stitch markers, cable needles and other metallic items so they’re right there when you need them.
And what better gift is there for a fiber enthusiast than a trip to the yarn store? If you’d like to give the gift of an experience as well as something material, consider a Northwest Wools Gift Certificate. We can create one for you in any dollar amount you choose. The recipient is sure to enjoy browsing our colorful, fiber-filled shelves, dreaming up new projects.
It’s not too late to create a handmade gift for that special someone!
There’s still time to make one-of-a-kind gifts for your family, friends and loved ones. We have one of the largest yarn and fiber inventories in town, including a large selection of beautiful bulky and super bulky yarns, and fast, easy patterns, so you can finish your handmade gifts quickly. Check out our shop models for inspiration!
The Golden Tickets Program offers great holiday deals and supports shopping local.

Specialty Class: Felted Purse with Resist Pattern
Friday, October 4, 1:00-4:00 pm | Sat, November 2, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Are you interested in adding a new fiber art to your cache of crafts? Then join us for this fun introduction to Wet Felting!
We’ll create an adorable small, buttoned purse using merino wool roving and a “resist” pattern. Our instructor, Susan Zenier, will guide us through the steps while helping with color and design choices. You’ll be amazed at how these soft fibers hold together when subjected to hot water!
This one-session class is designed for beginners, so if you’re curious about how to create a felted item, this is your chance to find out!
The class fee includes a one-ounce skein of merino wool roving in your choice of color – enough to make one purse. The Instructor will also provide additional accessory fibers for you to choose from for decorating your purse. These will be used to create the resist pattern on your project – and really give it that “Wow” factor!
All tools required for the project will be provided in class.
If you wish, you may purchase a button to finish off your purse (this is optional). As a student, you will receive a 10 percent discount on any additional supplies you purchase on the day of the class.
Our class instructor, Susan Zenier, is a passionate artist who works in many media. She has a strong aesthetic for mixing colors successfully to create high-impact results. Susan brings her eye for color and form to this specialty felting class.
