Rowan 40th Anniversary Celebration
Saturday, September 22
You are about to see an explosion of all things Rowan at Northwest Wools! We are thrilled to be part of Rowan’s first wave of Flagship Stores, joining a select group of a dozen or so LYSs in the United States. We are honored to join forces with this well-known, iconic yarn brand. As a Flagship Store, we will have access to trunk shows, models and special events that will bring you the best in design right here in Portland, Oregon!
We’ll celebrate our Flagship status and commemorate Rowan’s 40th, “Ruby” Anniversary with a ruby-themed party on Saturday, September 22. Stop by to see the new yarn, and even try some out at our yarn tasting table. Plus there will be drawings for prizes throughout the day! We had so much fun celebrating our store’s 30th Anniversary with all our wonderful customers, we’re hoping you’ll join us for this party as well! Stop by and raise a glass of sparkling wine or water to Rowan while you are admiring their beautiful yarns and patterns.

“Soane,” in Cashmere Tweed, from New Vintage DK
As part of Rowan’s Flagship Store planning, they shared their new design strategy with us at an invitation-only event. While we have always loved their inspirational designs, we came away impressed with Rowan’s new focus on adding more approachable pieces. New this season are more accessories to compliment their garments. And a large number of their new garments are very wearable – and something we could all make! This new design strategy allows you to create a beautiful Rowan design with smaller yarn quantities and fewer hours. There are still those “drop dead gorgeous but super difficult” knits, but they’ve included just as many “real people will make and wear them” items. It’s a smashing collection that we just love!
You will see a number of new and new-to-us yarns hitting our shelves this month, including Cashmere Tweed, Valley Tweed, and the brand-new Alpaca Classic. We have new colors of Kid Classic, special colors of Felted Tweed from Kaffe Fassett, as well as new Rowan pattern books and magazines.

“Dagny,” Designed by Arne & Carlos for Rowan’s New Nordic
Rowan is known for its classic pattern collections, created by prominent designers such as Kaffe Fassett, Kim Hargreaves and Martin Storey. This fall, well-known knitting icons Arne & Carlos are joining Rowan’s stable of designers. The latest issue of Rowan magazine, No. 64, celebrates both these collaborations and their “Ruby” Anniversary with a collection of patterns designed by these and other Rowan favorites, all in shades of red.
Many of us at Northwest Wools are hard at work on brand-new shop models made with Rowan yarns. We can’t wait for you to see them! In the meantime, we have some tried-and-true favorites: Churchmouse’s Easy Folded Poncho in Rowan Felted Tweed, the Spin-Stitch Scarf and any number of Groovy Shawls and Bias Drape Cowls incorporating one of our favorite mohairs, Rowan’s Kidsilk Haze.

Shaggy Bear Farms Pop-Up Shop
Friday, September 7, 10 am – 6 pm
It’s almost time for one of our favorite events at Northwest Wools! Wendy Hanson of Shaggy Bear Farms will be here once again with a roomful of fabulous yarns and fiber.
Wendy runs a “Farm to Needle” operation in Scio, Oregon, where she tends a flock of more than 400 animals and hand-dyes her yarns. Wendy knows all of her animals by name, and sings to them as she shears them! She can tell you all about the various “characters” on her farm, many of whom are rescue animals.
Wendy’s inventory truly has something for everyone: Beautiful, vibrant colors as well as undyed, natural hues; buttery soft merino/silk blends and rugged, “crunchy” yarns. Many of Wendy’s yarns are blends of fibers from her many breeds of animals. There are a variety of yarn weights to choose from, as well as undyed roving from her unique breeds.
Whether you knit, crochet, spin or weave, you are bound to find something you love at this First Friday event! Come on by and meet Wendy – you will learn a lot more about the life of an independent farmer and dyer.
Tuesdays, July 17 – August 28
Join us on Tuesday evenings this summer for a fun knitalong. The pattern is “Foolproof,” a customizable, two- or three-color, striped cowl with an unusual construction. Find the pattern on Ravelry.
The Ravelry description puts it this way:
“It’s an intriguing construction; a real mystery.
How about a cowl with no casting on & no binding off?
It’s made in rows but ends up all in one piece.
There’s no knitting in the round, no sewing, no grafting, no provisional cast-on, no picking up stitches. Promise.”
If you’re as intrigued as we are, join us to see how this mystery unfolds!
There is no charge to participate in the knitalong. Just bring your supplies and prepare to make some new fiber friends. You are welcome to use yarn from your stash, but if you choose to purchase something new, you’ll receive a 10% discount during knitalong hours.
We look forward to knitting with you!
Hot weather may be here, but there’s no need to put away your hooks and needles! When it’s too hot for wool, we turn to cotton and linen blends to spruce up our summer wardrobes. Here are just a few of our ideas for spring and summer projects:
Judy just finished this gorgeous summer tee, pictured above. The pattern is “Edie,” and it’s available for sale on Ravelry. Judy’s model was made with two balls of Schoppel’s Zauberball Cotton. Zauberball Cotton is 100% organic cotton, and comes in a variety of long-striping colors. Edie is knit top-down, and Ravelry photos show it looking great on a variety of shapes and sizes. I can’t wait to get this sweater on my needles!
Another of our favorite go-to yarns for warm weather is Zooey by Juniper Moon. This yarn is a blend of cotton and linen, and has a great thick-and-thin texture. Stop by and see all the great new colors we just got in! This pretty blue tee is called “Derecho,” and the pattern is available on Ravelry.
The “Paulina” top by Coco Knits is a perennial favorite in our shop. Paulina is made with Habu’s Cotton Gima, a unique yarn that gives the top its crisp, structural look. You can wear it over a tank top in even the hottest summer weather. Come on in to pick up a pattern and choose from our variety of Cotton Gima colors.
Even in the summer, there are times when you need an extra layer. The “Sycamore Vest” is a great option. This seamless knit is a great layering piece, adding just the right amount of style and warmth to an outfit. Our model was knit with Soft Linen by Classic Elite, a linen/wool/alpaca blend that’s a perfect all-season yarn for Portland. The pattern is available on Ravelry.
We’re excited to help you choose YOUR perfect summer project! Come on in and let us hook you up!
